What is it?

Polystyrene is a hydrocarbon polymer made from styrene. polystyrene can be solid or foamed. It is a versatile plastic used to make consumer products. When polystyrene gets made into foam it gets called expanded polystyrene. This means it's used for its insulating and cushioning properties. Foam polystyrene can be more than 95% air and gets used for all kinds of packaging.

What we use it for.

Many fridges, ovens, vacuums and other appliances get made with polystyrene. This is because it doesn't react with other materials and is cost effective. It can also get used in automotive, electronics, foodservice, insulation and medical. In automotive polystyrene makes up door panels, trim and handles. Foam polystyrene gets used in child seats.

How is it made?

Polystyrene gets made by stringing styrene. styrene also occurs in strawberries, cinnamon, coffee and beef. It gets made in a process called suspension polymerization.


Some of these include:

  • It is superior insulation which protects produce from temperature changes.
  • It is light weight and easy to stack.
  • It is water resistant.
  • It is ideal for hydro cooling.
  • It has excellent shock absorption qualities.
  • It is resistant to bacterial growth.


The disadvantages include:

  • It is flammable.
  • It can't get recycled.
  • It is harmful for the planet.
  • It isn't strong and breaks easy.

Is it worth it?

Polystyrene is worth it as its cheap and mouldable. The pros out way the cons by a lot and makes it worth it to use polystyrene.
